In early-2023, Queensland Rail Travel’s three outback trains, Spirit of the Outback, Inlander and Westlander, were due to get much needed facelifts as part of a big overhaul project. This meant there was an opportunity for the trains to be painted with new external decals.
The team at Queensland Rail Travel took the opportunity to incorporate a new design onto these old yet trusted carriages, and wanted to work with an Indigenous artist to create a design for the trains to bring further connection between its services and the communities and people it serves.
The artwork, ‘Tracks Across Country’ by David Williams, is inspired by the diversity of landscapes to be found in Queensland and honours the peoples who have continued to care for Country for over 65,000 years.
By travelling in the tracks of those who went before, we find opportunities to learn and grow. Across this ancient land, from the desert to the sea, we can deepen our understanding of place and immerse ourselves in the spirit of its people. First Nations cultures are waiting to be discovered wherever we go.
The journey points we pass through are all connected. Communities are made stronger by trade, education, and the sharing of stories and knowledge. Just like it was in the past, so it will be in the future.
As we follow these tracks across Country, we are enriched and inspired by exploring the histories and cultures that make Queensland a truly unique place to be.
