The Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (more recently the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation) is responsible for protecting the state’s natural environment, developing the government’s science strategy, and driving the government’s policy and program direction for people in Queensland.
To further strengthen its connection to and partnership with First Nations people, it commissioned Gilimbaa to develop a cultural pattern for its brand. The cultural pattern, created by Navada Currie, was to be built upon an existing visual framework which used the Fibonacci sequence as its foundation.
The theme ‘perfection in nature and science’ was used to guide how the artwork would look; using geometric shapes and lines to create repeatable patterns throughout the artwork.
Both the green and blue graphics combine, representing working together with First Nations people; learning and respecting the knowledge that First Nations people hold and using that to be an inspiration to all Queenslanders.
