"Honoring our elders, nurturing our youth" was the theme for this year's NAIDOC. Brisbane was the official host city for 2009 and there where many events showcasing tradition, community and culture.
The yearly tradition of the Musgrave Park Family Fun day saw a record crowd attend making it bigger and better than ever.
The South East Queensland Indigenous Chamber of Commerce held their annual NAIDOC breakfast at Parliament House in conjunction with Neil Willment officially launching his book, 'How to Start a Successful Aboriginal Business.'

The NAIDOC ball was held at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Center. More than 1300 people attended the showdcase event with a spectacular line-up of Indigenous talent perfoming including Troy Cassar-Daley, Dan Sultan, Bangarra and performances by the Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts as well as presenters Deborah Mailman and Ernie Dingo.

The NAIDOC committee presented the awards on the evening with the Lifetime Achievement Award to Professor Lowitja O'Donoghue for her distinguished leadership in Indigenous affairs, and her contribution in the battle for the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.
The 2009 National NAIDOC Award winners were:
Person of the Year: Professor Larissa Behrendt (Sydney)
Lifetime Achievement: Professor Lowitja O'Donoghue, AC, CBE (Adelaide)
Elder of the Year (Female): Doris Eaton (Perth) and Elsie Heiss (Sydney) - joint winners
Elder of the Year (Male): Frank H Lampard (Adelaide) and Reginald Roy Knox (Brisbane) - joint winners
Youth of the Year: Gemma Benn (Darwin)
Scholar of the Year: Chelsea Bond (Brisbane)
Apprentice of the Year: Danny Sebasio (Thursday Island, Torres Strait)
Artist of the Year: Wayne Quilliam (Melbourne)
Sportsperson of the Year: Andrew McLeod (Adelaide)
